Greendale Won’t Intimidate Pius XI

Greendale comes into this game on roll. They are the Woodland-Black Conference champs with an 8-1 record. Their only loss was to the Woodland-Black Conference champs, Brown Deer, in overtime. Other than the Brown Deer game, they have dominated all of their opponents this year. They have the top offense and defense in their conference based on points scored and points allowed. This is the 6th straight year that Greendale has made the playoffs. In 2006 they played in the State Championship and in 2007 they defeated a good Catholic Memorial team in the first round of the playoffs. Greendale is definitely a football school with a very good football program.

This year, they are loaded with talent. The QB does everything well and he can hurt you with the run just as much as with the pass and he is the second leading rusher on the team. He is a very accurate passer who has thrown many TD passes this year with only a couple of interceptions. The RB is a returning all-conference player and in front of him are 2 returning all-conference linemen. But the best the player on the team is a receiver. He is a potential all-state receiver who also kicks and punts the ball for the team. In fact, he as good as any kicker in the state. As a receiver, no one has been able to stop him all year. Greendale’s defense is just as strong as their offense as they have shut out 4 of their 9 opponents this year.

Greendale has 17 of last year’s 19 starters return this year and they are back-to-back conference champs. They are a veteran team and have huge expectations. Last year they lost in the playoffs to Franklin and this year they expect to make a run to the state championship game. They most likely see Pius XI as nothing more than a small speed bump on their road to Camp Randall. But the Popes are not intimidated by Greendale as they have played tough teams all year in the Classic 8 conference. As a team, the Popes have shown heart all year and have always found a way to win close games. If the Popes came keep this game close late in the 4th quarter, I believe they will once again dig deep and find a way to come out on top.
