Last year Pius XI and Kettle Moraine faced each other on the last game of the season. Kettle Moraine needed to win the game to get into the playoffs. But Pius XI played the spoiler and trounced Kettle Moraine, 24-0, and thus ending their season in the process. Once again it is the last game of the season but this time it’s Pius XI who needs to win and it’s Kettle Moraine who can play the role of the spoiler.
Defensively, Kettle Moraine is hard-hitting and runs a multiple defense. They play fast and aggressive and like to run downhill. They are an exceptionally good tackling team. None of the teams in Classic 8 conference found it easy to score on Kettle Moraine this year. Their kicking game is solid like all the teams in the Classic 8.
On the offensive side of the ball, Kettle Moraine started with the mulitple-I with a little spread. But over the weeks, their offense has slowly evolved to use their talents more. They have a lot of skill players with 4 very good receivers and the tailback who also comes out of the backfield and becomes a 5th receiver. They have a very good QB who is the Sophomore. He replaced the Junior who is now the team’s top receiver. When they empty the backfield and have a 5-receiver set, it makes it very hard for defenses to match up with their talent. All 5 receivers are very good runners after the catch so they present a huge challenge to the Popes’ defense.
Kettle Moraine is playing at home and it is the last game of the season for them. They have nothing to lose so they will play loose and hard. I’m sure they want revenge for last year’s defeat that knocked them out of the playoffs. I’m sure that Kettle Moraine would like nothing more than to end their season by knocking the Popes out of the playoffs.
For Pius XI, the playoffs start now. If they beat Kettle Moraine, they live to play another week. If they lose, their season is over. The Popes’ starting QB will not start in this game because he missed 2 practices this week because of a painful bruise. This will not be an easy game for the Popes to win. It will take an entire team effort to get past Kettle Moraine.
