Nick Collins Gives The Popes A Pre-game Pep Talk
Nick Collins, the star Green Bay Packer Safety, gave the the Popes a Pre-game pep talk before the season opener against Whitnall. I wish I could tell you exactly what he told the team but I was too busy taking photos. But I did hear him mention that some of his fondest memories as a football player were his days as a high school player.
He ended his talk by telling the Popes that he traveled all the way from Green Bay to be at this game and he wanted to see a good game with some hard-hitting on the field. I am not sure that Nick Collins would call a lopsided 63-15 Pius victory over Whitnall a good game but there was definitely some hard-hitting on the field. As for me, anytime the Popes has a running clock on their READ MORE
Whitnall Will Be A Big Test For Pius
Whitnall has the #1 ranked QB in the state who is 6’5″ and 225 lbs. and is being recruited by several Division 1 schools. They also have a returning receiver who is also a track star.
On the line, Whitnall has a national powerlifting champion who plays both way, Center and Defensive Tackle. They also have 2 state champion powerlifting champions on the line so Whitnall is definitely big and strong on the line.
Whitnall, who was 8-1 last year and runner-up in the Woodland Conference, are one of the favorites to win their conference this year. They have experience in the key positions and they will be big challenge for Pius XI in week 1.
Last year, Whitnall beat Pius XI 22-20 in a game that was decided on a few plays. This year, Whitnall will be a big test for Pius and the game will provide a good indication of how far the Pius football program has improved in 1 year under Coach Koch’s leadership.
Classic 8 Football 2010 Preview
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel came out with their Classic 8 Football Preview for the 2010 season. I noticed that all the “other key players” listed for Pius are Seniors. But I believe that Conor Senger, the sophomore QB, will have the biggest impact on the success of this year’s team. In Coach Koch’s offense, the QB must make split-second decision-making reads under pressure, which, in turn, requires flawless execution and discipline. There is no question that Connor has the athletic ability to be a great QB. The only question is how well will the young QB execute the offense under pressure.
I also noticed that Arrowhead coach Tom Taraska said that one of his players was “pretty special” for the 500th time in the last 10 years.
The Wisconsin Sports Network has come out with their own Classic 8 Football Preview. Wisconsin Sports Network predicts the Popes to finish 4th in the conference which would be good enough to make the playoffs.
